Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis *
7/30 Martinez, S. K., Miltenberger, R. G., & Deshmukh, S. S. (2024). Comparing video feedback and video modeling plus video feedback for improving soccer skills. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–11. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2903
Video feedback was compared to video modeling plus video feedback; both were effective for two players, while the VMVF condition was more effective for one

Behavior Analysis in Practice
7/28 Zhou, L., Wang, X., Wang, L., & Hu, X. (2024). Teaching students with autism to solve mathematical story problems: A replication and extension. Behavioral Interventions, e2045. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.2045
In a replication/extension, three Chinese students with autism were taught via telehealth to solve addition and subtraction word problems

Behavior and Social Issues Volume 33, Issue 1 (26 articles, 8 open access)
Most intriguing: The Effects of a Direct Instruction Curriculum Sequence on the Reading Comprehension Responses of Early Readers Open access, and is about curriculum design

8/2 Tanaka, C.Y., Maia, L. & Benvenuti, M. Addressing Racism in Behavioral Sciences: Recent Insights in the Experimental Analysis of Fairness and Inequity Aversion. Behav. Soc. Iss. (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s42822-024-00179-0
An interesting framing of racism as, perhaps, stemming from an aversion to impoverished groups

Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
7/31 Smith, S. W., Arroyo Antúnez, B. E., DeBartelo, J., Sullivan, W. E., Roane, H. S., & Craig, A. R. (2024). Synthesized alternative reinforcement and resurgence. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–12. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4202
Synthesized (e.g., multiple) reinforcers are found to suppress alternative responses more quickly than isolated reinforcers; however, when reinforcement is disrupted, the synthesized condition saw greater rates of resurgence

Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science
7/29 Truce: Outcomes and mechanisms of change of a seven-week Acceptance and Commitment Therapy program for young people whose parent has cancer
(In press) In comparison to a waitlist group, a group ACT intervention for teens with a parent who has cancer was effective in decreasing their feelings of "unmet needs."

Changes in metacognitions and executive functions during mindfulness and acceptance-based intervention among individuals with anxiety disorders: A randomized waitlist-controlled trial
(In press) In an Iranian population, an ACT intervention had positive changes in metacognitions (thinking about your own thoughts) and anxiety symptoms

Surrendering to Thrive: Evaluating the Psychometric Properties of the State of Surrender (SoS) Scale and its Relationship with Well-Being
(In press) State of surrender (essentially "acceptance") was found to be highly correlated with overall happiness; it can be increased with brief mindfulness interventions

7/30 Behavioral interventions for teaching perspective-taking skills: a scoping review
(In press) 29 studies were identified that taught perspective-taking skills, and found that many studies have differing methods but rely on behavioral principles, such as differential reinforcement. Many studies fail to report demographic info, generalization and maintenance, etc.

8/2 The effects of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on psychological and physical outcomes among cancer patients and survivors: An umbrella review
(In press) The authors find that ACT has positive effects, but that literature reviews were typically of low quality

Elucidating the Process-Based Emphasis in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
(In press) The authors examine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) through a Process-Based Therapy (PBT) framework -- essentially describing how CBT can fit into ACT (one notable issue with CBT is that thoughts can be "challenged," essentially arguing against your irrational thoughts based on evidence; Steve Hayes noted "[...] challenging the rationality of a thought can easily make a thought more central, noticed, or important.")

Temporal Dynamics of Extinction-Induced Behavior: A Human-Operant Analysis

John Michael Falligant, Ian Cero, Hunter King, Caleb Spink, Louis P. Hagopian, & Rusty W. Nall

Version of Record online: 27 July 2024 https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/n2cxv
(Open access) In 2 applied studies, unsignaled transitions to extinction were marked by increased interresponse time

Bridging the Gap: Evaluating a Fusion of Procedures for Conceptual Learning

Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter, Madeline J. Murphy

Version of Record online: 27 July 2024 https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/th8ef
(Open access) Examples and nonexamples are necessary to teach a concept (e.g., you have to know both horse and not-horse); the authors taught a biological concept to students using a full set, or a smaller expanding set, and found no differences between the two. They did find that mastery in training did not predict mastery of concepts, implying that subjects were sometimes memorizing small sets. This research is helpful for understanding what to teach; for more, see here

Why the Behavioral Health Industry Could See More Deals Between For-Profits and Nonprofits
Most of this article conflates “for-profit” and “private equity” for some reason.

Accidentally behavior analysis

A mainstream news article that relates to behavior analysis

WeightWatchers to cut jobs, costs as business declines, Modern Healthcare/Bloomberg
I don’t know much about the WeightWatchers approach (good? bad? evil?), but this is a concurrent schedule where you can choose two behavior chains: 1) diet and exercise forever (I think?); and 2) a shot every few months. I don’t blame anyone for picking a medical intervention – in fact, it is arguably the logical choice – but it is indicative of what behaviorists have to overcome. If an intervention is not superior (in some way) to Ritalin, or Ozempic, or the next drug, then it will fail.

Flashback

ABAI has an abandoned corner of their website with Behavior Analysis in Practice supplemental materials

Interactive graphing tutorials and a self-instruction DTT program are perhaps the best finds. It’s all 10+ years old. Can someone at ABAI start this back up?
