Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis *
11/12 Kim, J. Y., Morris, C., Ellsworth, M. E., Liu, X., & Seacord, N. F. (2024). Choice versus no choice: Practical considerations for increasing choices. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–18. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2920
(Open access) In a literature review of 38 articles, the authors found manipulations of the magnitude of choice, the timing of choice, and the delay to choice, and that preference shifted with history of reinforcement and other factors

11/15 Davidson, R. M., Traxler, H. K., DeFulio, A., Redish, A. D., Royle, J. A., & Gass, H. P. (2024). Contingency management for monosubstance use disorders: Systematic review and assessment of predicted versus obtained effects. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–19. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2922
Contingency management is very successful. With cocaine usage, it overperforms (in terms of cost/benefit); with cigarette usage, it underperforms. This suggests that rewards alone are not the only factor in CM success

In a study with college students, a group was set up to judge the majority color in an image, with equal black and white. When conformity with a majority was reinforced, conformity was typically shaped; conformity with a minority did not result as often, especially if conformity with a majority was reinforced first (sequence effect)

College students were given a computer-based math assignment with 15 challenging problems, interspersed with 5, 15, or 45 easy problems. After 5 minutes, they could choose which assignment to work on, and rank the difficulty of their last choice. 66% of students ranked the assignment with 45 easy problems as being the easiest and consuming the least amount of time, despite having more problems, which the authors believe means that task interspersal makes tasks seem easier and perhaps that completing problems is a reinforcer

DEA Extends Telehealth Flexibilities Through 2025
This is good...for telehealth businesses, probably? In reading about it, it's not clear at all if it helps patients. We'll all laugh about this someday when we're lining up to access GrokAI's ScriptoBot TM that sprays atomized viagra on-demand into our expectant eyes

Who Does the Accrediting? New Autism Therapy Regulation Highlights Big Question for the Industry
MassHealth requires ABA providers to be accredited, and there are only two accrediting organizations: the BHCOE and the ACQ. BHCOE is for-profit and is now a business consultant as Jade Health. So, let's hope the eventual government intervention isn't too disruptive

How One Woman Became the Scapegoat for America’s Reading Crisis, The Atlantic
Lucy Calkins authored a curriculum that was very popular. It was popular due to politics – it stressed learning to love reading without drilling kids with boring phonics lessons. But in a strange turn of events, “the science of reading” has become a part of pop culture, and her curriculum is suddenly out of style. What about the rest of her career?

Flashback

BF Skinner: “With a different organization to society as a whole, the old style family would not any longer be needed.”

What Skinner thought of A Clockwork Orange. What he thought of Chomsky. He thought the title “Beyond Freedom and Dignity” was intended to be provocative. He thought the family may not be necessary. Read the original interview on HathiTrust, or a cleaned up text version here.
