Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
4/27 Denner, M., Toegel, F., Holtyn, A. F., & Silverman, K. (2026). Employment outcomes of abstinence-contingent wage supplements for adults experiencing homelessness and alcohol use disorder. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 125(3), e70104. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70104
Among impoverished adults, providing an employment stipend dependent on abstinence from alcohol increased abstinence, increased employment, and reduced poverty. In this study, a further analysis of the data found that most of the abstinence group found a job, and most were able to earn enough to be above the poverty line

4/29 Palmer, D. C., Ayres, J. J. B., & Millard, W. J. (2026). In Memoriam: John W. Donahoe, 1932–2026. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 125(3), e70101. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70101

(Open access) 3 adults used a self-study series of videos to teach sign language according to a matrix; 2 participants learned 6 targets, which lead to 30 untrained compound targets, while 1 participant required additional training

4/28 Sayo, H., Cengher, M. The Effect of Preference on the Acquisition of Echoics and Transfer Across Verbal Operants. Analysis Verbal Behav (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40616-025-00225-x

12 new behavioral health study findings to know

“Nearly half of the U.S. states were found to meet 25% or less of their estimated mental health workforce needs, according to a March report from Inseparable. At least 14 states reported “catastrophic shortages” in their psychiatric hospitals, 17 reported such shortages in community mental health providers, and 13 in behavioral health crisis systems. Arkansas, Delaware, Iowa and Nebraska reported catastrophic shortages across all three.”

While there are implications that funding sources are finding ABA to be too expensive, perhaps more funding would attract more workers?

‘Relentless’ focus on literacy undermines reading for pleasure, says report, The Guardian
The popular movement towards “whole language” reading – a technique which, overall, does not work – caused many children to be poor readers. When a person is bad at something, do they enjoy doing it? Paradoxically, the sentiment that children should enjoy reading before they can read results in poor teaching and a failure to enjoy reading.
