Business world

Autism services, behavioral health, etc.

The promising fix for mental health crises that hospitals can’t afford is: dedicated mental health units that direct people away from the emergency room. These types of “we can’t afford effective treatment” stories are always questionable. When the #1 mental health problem is depression and each ER visit costs $13k on average, why keep shunting people into inappropriate treatment in an emergency department? Well, specialized units apparently have trouble getting reimbursed, so the actual problem is the existence of insurance companies

Why Americans are living longer again, Vox
Americans aren’t just living longer – all cause mortality could be at the lowest level in American history. Virtually the entire reason: a sharp decline in overdose deaths. Why might this be the case, when “we can’t afford effective treatment”? As this Vox article notes, the US has cracked down on international supplies of precursor chemicals for synthetic drugs, but also lots of addicts have simply already died. Maybe we can get contingency management covered by health insurance companies before the next gas station heroin is invented?
