Behavior Analysis in Practice
9/28 Savioli, L., Allen, R., Weiss, M.J. et al. Training Compassionate Behaviors in the Supervisory Context: A Systematic Replication of Rohrer and Weiss (2023). Behav Analysis Practice (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-026-01238-1
In a replication, early-career BCBAs were taught 11 "compassionate care" skills via BST through Zoom. The subjects learned the skills and were observed using them during follow-up probes

9/29 Curiel, H. A Graphing Tutorial for the Changing-Criterion Design: Instructions for macOS. Behav Analysis Practice (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-026-01214-9
It's actually a tutorial for using Excel on a Mac

9/30 Hathaway, K.L., Moore, H., Gustafason, E.E. et al. Fostering Patient Safety and Success through Multidisciplinary Collaboration on Modified Bolus Placements. Behav Analysis Practice (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-026-01237-2
In pediatric feeding treatment, the child may hold the food in their mouth (pack) or spit it out (expel). The authors used 2 novel utensils (senso brush or ARK probe) with 2 subjects to decrease expels, and they were effective

The authors conceptualize leadership as discrete behaviors in 4 classes: leading, training, coaching, and managing

Behavioral Interventions *
9/29 Yucesoy-Ozkan, Serife, Turan Demirkiran, Gamze Aydin, and Osman Yasar. 2026. “ Block by Block to Success: Teaching Subtraction With Regrouping to High School Students With Intellectual Disabilities Through a Manipulative-Supported Direct Instruction Package,” Behavioral Interventions: e70149. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70149
4 high school students with special needs were taught subtraction with regrouping via direct instruction with manipulatives. 3/4 subjects acquired the skill, maintained the skill, and generalized the skill to a computer program without further use of manipulatives

10/1 Hustyi, Kristin M., Marissa E. Yingling, and Erica S. Ranade. 2026. “ Training and Professional Development in Treatment Intensity Recommendations Among Practicing Behavior Analysts: A Preliminary Investigation,” Behavioral Interventions: e70146. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70146
In a survey of 559 BCBAs and BCBA-Ds, the authors find that most respondents received training regarding treatment intensity recommendations through their employer. Ironically, respondents have low regard for this modality and would have preferred training within their grad program. For more info on recommendations, see here

Perspectives on Behavior Science
10/2 Leslie, J.C. An Alternative Behavior of Organisms: A Review of Baum’s (2024) Introduction to Behavior: An Evolutionary Perspective. Perspect Behav Sci (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-026-00518-z
It certainly sounds like a glowing review

Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
9/27 Subramaniam, S., Ibarra, C., Aguiniga, L., Datray, S., Lee, P., DeMayo, M., & Kyonka, E. (2026). Author diversity in the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior 1958–2025. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 126(3), e70144. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70144
The authors used a API to collect and estimate gender and race of all JEAB authors from 1958-2025. Their estimation is that female primary authorship has increased from about 6% to about 33%, while nonwhite names are still lower than the percentage of the US population.

9/28 Cooper, A. R., St. Peter, C. C., & Williams, C. L. (2026). Effects of positive or negative reinforcement history and extinction arrangement on resurgence. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 126(3), e70147. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70147
In a translational study, resurgence was examined in 2 conditions: earning or avoiding losing money. When monetary loss was discontinued, avoidance responses persisted, making comparison impossible in experiment 1. In experiment 2, "unavoidable monetary losses resulted in greater resurgence relative to discontinuation of monetary earnings"

9/29 Machado, M. A., Huber, H., Thompson, S., Monasky, C. A., Najafighabouri, M., & Cicchillo, B. M. (2026). Preference assessment and reinforcer effectiveness in domestic cats. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 126(3), e70148. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70148
(Open access) The authors provided three types of putative reinforcers (food, social, toys) in a free-operant arrangement to determine preference within and between categories. In a very cat result, the highest preference maintained a nose-poke response in 3/4 cats. Nevertheless, this method can be used in homes and shelters

10/1 Hock, A., & Schmidt, M. (2026). Decoding diversity: Are there patterns in the organization of grooming movements in domestic cats? Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 126(3), e70146. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70146
(Open access) 17 cats were recorded while grooming, with 40 movement patterns used to identify the allocation of time to different body areas. Oral grooming (as opposed to scratching and face washing) consumed the most time, with significant variation between patterns in individual cats. The authors conclude that grooming typically moves to adjacent body parts and does not follow a strict pattern otherwise

The Psychological Record
9/28 Oliveira, J.S.C.D., Tomlinson, G.M. & Petursdottir, A.I. Reorganization of Stimulus Classes Established via One-To-Many and Comprehensive Training. Psychol Rec (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-026-00699-8
In a translational study, college students were taught stimulus classes via one-to-many training, an equivalence-based system, or by comprehensive instruction in which all relations were directly trained. Later the same students were given reorganization training on the same classes, with more students reaching accuracy in the one-to-many group. However, this was not the case when the reorganization training was manipulated; the conclusion is that one-to-many instruction can be more efficient and flexible under certain circumstances

10/1 Okouchi, H. Does “Mutual Reinforcement” Function as Reinforcement for Humans? An Examination of the Function of Maintaining Response Rates Using a Minimal Social Situation. Psychol Rec (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-026-00700-4
Mutual reinforcement is a condition under which responses provide a reinforcer for another organism and vice versa. In a translational experiment, a key press provided points exchangeable for money to another person who was unseen by the subject. Given this minimal information, the rate of key pressing was similar to that of a variable time schedule, implying that mutual reinforcement does not maintain high rates of human responding in the absence of other social information

Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders
9/28 Bunyan, N., Feuerer, C. & Vostanis, A. Evaluating the Effects of Skill-Based Treatment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Single-Case Studies. J Autism Dev Disord (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10803-026-07547-2
(Open access) In a metaanalysis, 28 studies on SBT were reviewed, finding a significant reduction in challenging behavior but a mixed-quality evidence base

Business world

Autism services, behavioral health, etc.

Outside Capital Isn’t the Problem in Autism Therapy, Capitalism is. Sure, maybe we editorialized that last clause of the sentence, because we can’t expect a fish to recognize the water in which it swims. Private equity seeks profit above all else. Have individuals also sought profit alone? Of course – but profit is the sole raison d’etre of the entire enterprise of private equity

Many surgical interventions are little better than placebo, The Economist
When surgeons are paid per surgery, surgeons perform surgeries with weak evidence, while in countries with salaried doctors (such as the UK), these surgeries are performed at a lower rate. And surprisingly, an awful lot of surgeries just don’t have good evidence in their favor:

A Finnish trial of a common knee procedure, meanwhile, concluded that patients who had real surgery had more problems in the affected knee ten years on than those who had had sham surgery (anaesthesia followed by a superficial incision).
