 The authors used a web-based program to present pairs of videos as a preference assessment with 4 kids. They found preferences in all cases, and the videos functioned as reinforcers for 7/8 assessments

This reduced challenging behavior and increased on-task behavior. As an example, dishwashing was swapped with bussing tables because the subject preferred movement

 (Open access) 10 undergrads were trained with either simultaneous presentation, or successive; then the phase was switched to the alternative. Regardless of group, the participants maintained discriminations. However, the simultaneous condition was more efficient

 ACT helps with sleep, but it's unclear what qualities should be targeted for improvement. The authors found that present moment awareness, values, and experiential avoidance were the most important factors 


Time series machine learning for idionomic process-based treatment planning: A tutorial on tsBoruta
 (In press) (Open access) 3 different algorithms analyzed trichotillomania, finding that cognitive fixation is a predictor, and that treatment areas should include fixation, valued action, and anxiety

Aetna fined $550K for mental health parity violations

The state identified incomplete claims files, along with delays in deciding on claims and improper denials. Aetna was unable to explain those delays, the release said. The department also alleged inaccurate or incomplete assessment and application of benefit limits, as well as “flawed methods” for compliance. The company was allegedly not submitting required claim delay letters during that time, either, according to the government.

Autism spectrum disorder claims were of particular concern, especially for applied behavior analysis.

Body language in sports isn’t mystical. It can win or lose the next play, The Athletic
Imagine our surprise when we see a mainstream (The Athletic is owned by the NYT) article on body language in sports authored by Amy Cuddy of “power pose” infamy. “Body language” is behavior; some is easily discriminable (e.g., the middle finger) while some is less so (e.g., a heavy sigh). Still, her conclusions go beyond the evidence:

These aren’t poses we learn. They’re innate responses to success and failure — part of our evolutionary inheritance.

One of her main points is that expressing frustration via body language can cause teammates to make mistakes and opponents to gain confidence. But this is not universally true – individual teammates could, for example, perform better when a superstar teammate is frustrated. There are even ways to find this out!
