Behavior Analysis in Practice
4/1 Boggs, M.A., Rapp, J.T., Cook, J.L. et al. Are Keynote and Invited Speakers at State Behavior Analytic Conferences Experts on Their Presentation Topics?. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01051-2
(Open access) 735 keynote addresses from 2021-2023 were analyzed, and only 31% of speakers had a topic-specific publication, and the percentage increased over the years. Of the 69% of speakers who did not have a topic-specific publication, 40% of that number had no publications at all

4/1 Breaux, C.A. A Pilot Study in Changing Self-Reported Assent Practices in ABA via an Asynchronous Continuing Education Unit. Behav. Soc. Iss. (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s42822-025-00199-4
A before-and-after survey examined the assent practices of over 1,000 BCBAs who took a CEU course. According to the self-reports, BCBAs increased their assent practices

Behavior Modification *
3/30 Riden, B. S., Markelz, A. M., Germansky, S., Brown, T. S., Raso, A. J., & Morris, E. R. (2025). Increasing the Active Supervision of Inclusive Early Childhood Education Pre-Service Teachers Using Goal Setting and Step Counters. Behavior Modification, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/01454455251325332
Does increasing step count for supervisors at a school site lead to increased supervision? The results are mixed, but there was an increase over baseline levels

Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
4/2 Kurnellas, R., Sutton, C., Gelino, B., Taylor, H., Smith, A., Reed, D., & Yi, R. (2025). Projected alcohol demand in college students with heavy drinking. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–11. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70006
Asking students to rate the value of alcohol correlates with current and future drinking; this study asked students to predict the value of alcohol 3 months in the future. It seems that this prediction of value did not predict alcohol consumption, as drinking rates did not typically change in the 3 month window

Toegel, F., Dumas, A. D., & Perone, M. (2025). Contributions of delay, duration, and intensity of shock on rats' choices involving conflicting-valence consequences. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–23. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70008
The authors conducted several experiments on rats to model self-control, wherein a response has both reinforcing and punishing consequences. When a lever delivers food plus a delayed shock, there are effects on delay and magnitude of the shock, but signaling the shock has no effect

Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders
4/3 Luskin-Saxby, S., Zimmer-Gembeck, M.J., Sulek, R. et al. Autism Early Intervention Providers: Their Priorities, Use of Empirically Supported Practices, and Professional Development Needs. J Autism Dev Disord (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10803-025-06808-w
(Open access) Providers mostly use evidence-based practices, but also use "sensory-based" practices that are not evidence based

A training module in a learning management software package consisted of instructions, a model, and a quiz. The investigators recorded more checklist items used in subsequent emails, but recipients did not rate them as meaningfully improved

BACB
BACB Removes DEI Content from Coursework Requirements
Last week we posted about the March BACB newsletter that detailed removing DEI requirements in future education and continuing education standards for the stated reason that “DEI” is now subject to federal threats. Behavioral Health Business has a reported piece that quotes a few sources who are similarly unhappy with the cowardly nature of the decision.

Autism Providers Leaving Authorized Hours on the Table, Multidisciplinary Care Models Booming
CentralReach has some kind of a huge data set on providers. What they find is that providers are only using about 42% of direct hours, and even less in parent training hours. There are more centers opening (except in California, perhaps due to costs?); more providers are including more service lines (e.g., PT, OT); and more parent training may reduce client churn.

Accidentally behavior analysis

A mainstream news article that relates to behavior analysis

It’s Always the Other Side That’s Been Brainwashed, The New Yorker
Apparently the topic of “brainwashing” (which we just wrote about) has had something of a resurgence, and the author of this New Yorker piece comments on 4 new books on the topic. His conclusion recalls a common thought about believers in conspiracies: that it is more comfortable to believe in a grand plan than to believe in no plan at all.

The most disturbing possibility isn’t that millions have been brainwashed. It’s that they haven’t.
