Behavior Analysis in Practice
5/21 Heward, W.L., Kimball, J.W. Ellen P. Reese: Always Give the Learner the Opportunity to be Right. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01066-9
A transcription of an old interview of Ellen Reese by Bill Heward. Three of her books and a portion of one of her films are available here, a longer film here, and an ABA workbook co-written with Beth Sulzer-Azaroff here

5/22 Rojas, A., Cividini-Motta, C. & Llinás, M. Contextual Fit of Interventions for Vocal Stereotypy: A Systematic Review of Research Evaluating Antecedent-Based Interventions. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01056-x
People tend to be more accepting of antecedent interventions for behaviors that are not harmful; the authors examined 34 articles on vocal stereotypy and find that the most common antecedent intervention is environmental enrichment

Behavioral Interventions *
5/19 Rapp, J.T., Boggs, M.A., Cook, J.L., Richling, S.M. and Hatch, R. (2025), The Question of Expertise and Scientific Rigor at ABA Conferences for CEUs: A Case Example and Analysis of the SexABA 2025 Conference. Behavioral Interventions, 40: e70019. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70019
Should presenters at conferences be published? What is "expertise"? For an interesting commentary, see Jennifer Haddock's post here

Perspectives on Behavior Science
5/19 Salinas, A., Vasconcelos, M. & Machado, A. Midsession Reversal Task with Variable Trial Spacings: Further Tests of the Timing Hypothesis with Starlings. Perspect Behav Sci (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-025-00451-7
(Open access) Starlings received reinforcement for picking a green light for 40 trials, which was then switched to a red light for 40 trials after an inter-trial interval. To test if the starlings "anticipated" the change, the ITI was shortened or lengthened. This did change responding, but not by the magnitude anticipated by the researchers

5/21 Baum, W.M. Explaining Performance on Interval and Ratio Schedules with a Molar View of Behavior. Perspect Behav Sci (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-025-00455-3
(Open access) Molar vs. molecular could be defined as: ongoing vs. momentary. For more, see ABAI blog linked below

Behavior Modification *
5/24 Taylor, R., Cella, M., & Wykes, T. (2025). Cognitive Remediation Is an Evidence-Based Psychological Therapy: Isn’t It Time It Was Treated Like One? Behavior Modification, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/01454455251343303
Cognitive remediation is a therapy, sometimes used for schizophrenia, that teaches various cognitive skills. It has been around for decades and has been shown to be effective

Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
5/19 Thrailkill, E. A., Podlesnik, C. A., Quick, S. L., & Shahan, T. A. (2025). Effects of reinforcer probability on attending to element and compound sample stimuli. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–13. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70023
(Open access) When dividing attention between tasks, organisms tend to allocate attention and responding according to the matching law. In experiment 1, the authors had a training session where one condition had more reinforcement, and in the test condition the pigeons allocated more responding to the training stimulus. In experiment 2, more reinforcement resulted in more attention, so more complex sample stimuli still resulted in efficient responding

Sheridan, D. J., Rapp, J. T., Anderson, A. N., Edgemon, A. K., Pinkston, J. W., & Walker, E. J. (2025). Effects of rules on schedule performance with synchronous schedules of reinforcement. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–15. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70022
In a task where walking at certain speeds on a treadmill controlled preferred music playback, accurate rules exerted control on about 61% of participants, while inaccurate rules exerted control on 0%

5/21 Richardson, E. J., Mason, M. G., Murphy, S., Bruce, K. E., & Galizio, M. (2025). Functional equivalence and class expansion in rats using olfactory stimuli. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–17. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70021
(Open access) Rats were trained to form equivalence relations between smells, and then the authors attempted to expand the relation by adding new smells. Initially the rats did not expand the equivalence class, so the authors tried again with smaller class sizes; 6/8 rats expanded the equivalence classes in this case

Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders
5/21 LeBlanc, L.A., Mintz, C., Caffee, A. et al. School Placement Outcomes Following Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention in a Routine Clinical Care Setting. J Autism Dev Disord (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10803-025-06880-2
Most kids graduated from 1 EIBI program entered general education classrooms, while most who left before graduating entered special education classrooms or alternative schooling. Standardized test scores correlated with classroom placement

5/24 Trauner, D., Umlauf, A., Grelotti, D.J. et al. Cannabidiol (CBD) Treatment for Severe Problem Behaviors in Autistic Boys: A Randomized Clinical Trial. J Autism Dev Disord (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10803-025-06884-y
(Open access) In a small RCT through UCSD, boys with ASD did not benefit significantly from CBD. WTF

‘Slow Is Smooth, Smooth Is Fast’: Sustainable Scaling For Autism Service Providers
Transitively…slow is fast? Whatever. Vince Carbone gave advice about “scaling” (some people might refer to it as “growing”?) a business, and had much the same idea: you establish something small and high quality, and then you try to replicate that.

Accidentally behavior analysis

A mainstream news article that relates to behavior analysis

A new theory on gun violence, NPR
An economist believes:

From a behavioral perspective then, gun violence is not necessarily a matter of precurrent behavior and is enhanced by low response effort. Changing the environment is a good idea, since “gun violence” does not exist within the citizens of Chicago. The economist mentions that we simply could never rid America of 400 million guns, but then again, Australia did something like that.
