Behavior Analysis in Practice
11/23 McComas, J.J., Drossel, C., Sundberg, S. et al. Ableism in Applied Behavior Analysis: Historical Context of Services for Autistic People. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01100-w
(Open access) Examining ableist attitudes in the history of ABA

Mejía-Buenaño, S. Subjective Can Be Scary—But Worth It: Personal Reflections on How Qualitative Methods Can Advance Applied Behavior Analysis. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01120-6
(Open access) The experiences of one researcher who embraced qualitative research while completing her PhD

11/25 Weber, J., Weiss, M.J. & Ferris, K. Training Instructors to Support Assent and Assent Withdrawal During Instruction for Students with Disabilities. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01122-4
BST was used to teach practitioners to recognize individual signs of assent and withdrawal of assent within DTT

11/26 Diller, J.W., Li, A. Incorporating Qualitative Data when Training Behavior Analysts. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01124-2
The authors recommend teaching students to use qualitative data "to evaluate social validity, metacognition, and learning outcomes"

Journal of Organizational Behavior Management *
11/28 Overstreet, D., Harvey, C., & May, M. E. (2025). Using the teach-back method to improve staff implementation of naturalistic environmental teaching. Journal of Organizational Behavior Management, 1–10. https://doi.org/10.1080/01608061.2025.2594400
Teach-back originated in medicine; a practitioner explains something to a patient, who then has to explain it back or demonstrate a skill to the practitioner. This has been proven effective in teaching certain skills in behavior analysis (preference assessment, token economy) and can be faster than BST. The authors used it to teach NET to students, and with feedback and modeling they acquired the skill (but at that point, aren't they basically doing BST?)

Behavioral Interventions *
11/25 Niland, Haven S., Samantha Bergmann, Karen A. Rader, Katherine M. Flores, Romeo I. Salazar, and Caroline Richey. 2026. “ Comparing Digital Stimulus Prompts to Teach Conditional Discriminations to Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder,” Behavioral Interventions: e70060. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70060
In a tablet program designed to deliver instruction, the authors used a within-stimulus prompt (movement) or extra stimulus prompt (pointing); both were effective for 2/3 participants, while neither was effective for 1/3 participants

Demchuk, Nicole C., Angelica Ibarra, and Bethany A. Hansen. 2026. “ A Stepwise Evaluation of Pairing and Shaping for Children With Autism and Feeding Difficulties,” Behavioral Interventions: e70064. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70064
Two autistic children with feeding difficulties were treated with a pairing intervention (e.g., NCR). This did not result in acceptance of new food. In 1/2 subjects, shaping resulted in trying new foods; and 1/2 subjects, nonremoval of the spoon was required

11/26 Frank-Crawford, Michelle A., Drew E. Piersma, Savannah A. Tate, Sabrina M. Olivera, and Zhibo Rong. 2026. “ A Comparison of Latency- and Rate-Based CSAs in the Treatment of Automatically Maintained Self-Injury,” Behavioral Interventions: e70063. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70063
Latency-based competing stimulus assessment was compared to a traditional rate-based CSA. For high-value items that reduced self-injury, the assessments were equally accurate, but rate-based CSA was more accurate when results were mixed

Perspectives on Behavior Science
11/24 Meindl, J.N., Ivy, J.W., Delgado, D.M. et al. Towards a Functional Account of Mass-Shooting: Prediction and Influence of Violent Behavior. Perspect Behav Sci (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-025-00483-z
(Open access) We wrote about this, and this article goes into more detail while treading some of the same ground. In particular, the authors point out the concept of "leakage," which we also highlight

Barnes-Holmes, D., Hayes, L.J., Harte, C. et al. Reconstructing RFT through the Lens of the Interbehavioral Field: What is a Relational Frame Anyway?. Perspect Behav Sci (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-025-00485-x
(Open access) RFT was influenced by JR Kantor's interbehaviorism, essentially a comprehensive theory of the bidirectional relationship between behavior and environment. The authors discuss RFT and interbehaviorism mainly as it relates to mentalistic attributions of relational frames

Lazzeri, F., Zilio, D. Teleological Properties of Operant Behavior. Perspect Behav Sci (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-025-00481-1
The authors posit that teleology (e.g., attributions of function or cause) is consistent with Darwinism and operant behavior. Howard Rachlin considers himself a "teleological behaviorist," but it's surprisingly hard to say what exactly that means

Behavior and Social Issues
11/26 Lalor, I.J., Roche, B. Assessing the Predictive Validity of the Function Acquisition Speed Test in the Context of Voting Behavior. Behav. Soc. Iss. (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s42822-025-00232-6
Pro-choice and "pro-life" voters used the FAST and the implicit association test (IAT); each accurately predicted their self-reported voting behavior

Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions *
11/26 Cenatus, M., Blair, K.-S. C., & Risse, M. (2025). Using Contingency Mapping for Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007251372620
Contingency mapping, basically a visual representation of a contingency, was used with 3 autistic students with 3 separate teachers. All 3 saw increased on-task behavior, and everyone involved rated the intervention as socially acceptable

Journal of Behavioral Education
11/26 Cariveau, T., Lewis, T. Omne Trium Perfectum/Everything that Comes in Threes is Perfect. J Behav Educ (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-025-09609-4
The authors argue that, while a conventional single-subject multiple baseline design arranges 3 tiers of effects, 2 should be sufficient

European Journal of Behavior Analysis
11/26 Bourland, G., & Syed, N. (2025). Who is certifying whom? European Journal of Behavior Analysis, 1–28. https://doi.org/10.1080/15021149.2025.2593208
A review of credentialing organizations including the BACB, IABO, QABA, and BICC

How AI is helping reduce nursing burnout in hospitals
Many AI companies are scrambling to automate SOAP notes or automate transcription, but some are also trying to schedule, monitor vitals, give treatment advice, and even triage (!!!). An argument can be made that, while some repetitive and frustrating tasks should be automated, distancing employees from the products of their labor is at the very heart of burnout. But at least when the nurses are all alienated they’ll be able to get…AI therapy?

I taught an octopus piano (It took 6 months), YouTube

A YouTuber bought an octopus from a fish market, designed & built various underwater piano prototypes, and shaped octopus behavior. He appears to figure out shaping from trial and error. He also discovers that it is easier to shape octopus behavior when he incorporates phylogenic behavior.
