10/15 Tomlinson, C. S., Toevs, E. K., Gallagher, H. D., Angus, A., & Lindhiem, O. (2025). Meta-Analysis on the Effectiveness of mHealth Interventions for Mental Health: A 10-Year Update. Behavior Modification, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/01454455251380218
The authors reviewed 79 mobile (phone-delivered, presumably an app) mental health interventions, and found "small to moderate" effects, which were greater when supplementing traditional mental health care
10/16 Omrani, A. R., Lanovaz, M. J., & Moroni, D. (2025). Machine Learning to Detect Vocal Stereotypy: Improving Duration-Based Measures. Behavior Modification, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/01454455251380510
(Open access) The authors used machine learning to automatically track duration of stereotypy, which correlated highly with more intensive human measurement

10/17 Araiba, S. (2025). A search for language in birds in the lab and the wild. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(3), e70063. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70063
Given findings in behavior analysis and ethology, birds may have language. Universal grammar, indeed
Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions *
10/14 Cooper, R. N., Gifford, M. R., Crook, K. C., Ringdahl, J. E., Overstreet, A. M., Hutchinson, V., & Mangum, D. (2025). An Evaluation of Reward Contingencies and Rule Statements Within the Good Behavior Game. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007251339159
In the Good Behavior Game, students are told the rules and then (typically) get rewards for "good" behavior. To test whether the contingency or the rule statement was exerting stimulus control, the authors did a traditional game (statement plus contingency) or just the rules with no reward. The contingency condition was more effective

The Psychological Record
10/15 Seidler, D., Battle, M.C. & Drake, C.E. Examining Relations among Psychological Flexibility, Psychological Inflexibility, and Positive and Negative Outcomes of Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms. Psychol Rec (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-025-00661-0
After trauma, some people experience PTSD, some people don't, and some people even experience growth (PTG). The authors examined scores of PTSD and flexibility in 266 American veterans, finding that inflexibility did predict PTSD
10/16 Hu, S., Matsuda, S. Establishing Equivalence Classes via Intraverbal Bidirectional Naming: A Replication. Psychol Rec (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-025-00659-8
Tact and intraverbal training led to MTS in Japanese students, leading the authors to conclude that equivalence class formation can result from bidirectional naming
Journal of Behavioral Education
10/15 Scheman, N., Codding, R., Briesch, A. et al. Examining the Effectiveness of a Combined Math and Relaxation Intervention for Students with Math Anxiety. J Behav Educ (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-025-09605-8
(Open access) Math anxiety and math performance have a correlation; the authors intervened on 4 fifth graders with math anxiety by introducing progressive relaxation and math tutoring. 3/4 improved their math performance, with 2/4 reducing their math anxiety
Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science
10/13 Mindful Self-Compassion program adapted for professional caregivers of juvenile detention facilities: A pilot mixed-method study
(In press) (Open access) A self-compassion intervention was used with employees in a juvenile detention facility in Portugal. There was a decrease in fear of being compassionate, and perceived changes in burnout
10/15 Smartphone app-delivered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for post-traumatic stress disorder and gambling harm in veterans: A pilot feasibility study
(In press) (Open access) 24 veterans suffering from PTSD and/or gambling problems used a smartphone ACT app, and most symptoms improved for 6 weeks

Why Most Payers, Providers Abhor Out-of-Network Billing in Autism Therapy
Due to insurance laws effective in all 50 states, most ABA is in-network. Out of network claims are rare and expensive. ABA Centers of America, the suspiciously generic-named provider suing over (supposed) nonpayment or underpayment of claims, uses it as a strategy to (presumably) make more money, pissing off payers.
Accidentally behavior analysis

America Is Sliding Toward Illiteracy, The Atlantic
Mixed feelings about this article. The author concludes:
Failed education is not a matter of funding. This is true, insofar as more money does not increase student performance
Failed education is not due to smartphone access (or not solely). This is true, insofar as smartphones are not the only changing variable. Do smartphones have a deleterious effect? Maybe! This is what people have believed about new technology in every generation
Failed education is due to “low expectations.” This is not exactly true, in our opinion. Why would teachers “lower standards”? It is due to a belief that compensatory education cannot be effective – that failure is within the student. The example the author gives, of Mississippi requiring a reading test to pass the 3rd grade, also mentions that teachers now screen for reading difficulty and learn about compensatory education
