Behavioral Interventions *
9/3 Johnson, Carissa, Claire Epperson, Odessa White, et al. 2025. “A Review of Support Staff Perception of and Training on Psychotropic Medication and Challenging Behavior in Adults With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.” Behavioral Interventions: e70040. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70040.
In a literature review, it is clear that training about medication has increased knowledge of medication and its side effects, but not whether it has increased acceptance or usage
9/4 Diffley, Shauna, Richard M. Kubina, Jr., Chris Noone, and Aoife Mc Tiernan. 2025. “An Evaluation of Programmed Procedural Fidelity Errors on Data-Based Decision-Making During Precision Teaching.” Behavioral Interventions: e70039. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70039.
(Open access) Fidelity errors were programmed into teacher decisions in Precision Teaching, which found that in the short term this does not significantly impact student performance
9/5 Mitchelson, Brittany V., Claudia L. Dozier, Stacha C. Leslie, and Sarah C. Diaz de Villegas. 2025. “An Evaluation of Enhanced Written Instructions for Training Interventionist Skills: Acquisition and Generalization.” Behavioral Interventions: e70035. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70035.
Enhanced written instructions (step-by-step instructions with minimal jargon and sometimes illustrations) were shown to be effective for some people for learning some skills. These authors just reinvented mathetics
Zhou, Liming, Xiaoyi Hu, Xueting Qi, et al. 2025. “Teaching Listener Selection to Children With Autism: Emphasizing the Role of Joint Control.” Behavioral Interventions: e70041. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70041.
(Open access) Joint control has been found by the authors to be superior to conditional discrimination in auditory-visual discrimination tasks, which they hypothesize is due to the multiple control inherent in the task
9/6 Slocum, Sarah K., Alec M. Bernstein, Catherine L. Williams, and Timothy R. Vollmer. 2025. “Initial Suppression of Escape Behavior Across Three Behavioral Treatments.” Behavioral Interventions: e70036. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70036.
With 22 children over the first 10 sessions, escape-maintained behavior was treated most effectively (e.g., fastest suppression) when not using escape extinction. Differential reinforcement and instructional fading are both effective
Perspectives on Behavior Science Volume 48, Issue 3: Challenges to ABA (18 articles, 6 open access)
Most intriguing: Applied Behavior Analysis in the Crosshairs: Neurodiversity, the Intact Mind, and Autism Politics
(Open access) The author presents a compelling hypothesis, though ironically one that would be challenging to discuss with anti-ABA advocates
Behavior and Social Issues
9/4 Cividini-Motta, C., Blair, KS.C., Salloum, A. et al. Interdisciplinary Training: Preparing School-Based Professionals for Children with Behavioral and Mental Health Challenges. Behav. Soc. Iss. (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s42822-025-00221-9
Two federally-funded programs used multi-disciplinary training to prepare grad students to work in schools with kids with EBD. The programs worked well based on participant ratings, supervisor ratings, and child outcomes
Behavior Modification *
9/1 Erhard, P., Falcomata, T. S., Nesselrode, R., Vargas Londoño, F., & Ramirez-Cristoforo, A. (2025). Evaluation of Instructive Feedback as a Strategy for Generalizing Tacts Across Primary and Secondary Languages. Behavior Modification, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/01454455251364284
(Open access) Instructive feedback, sometimes called secondary targets, were used in this study by presenting English words, then Spanish words as secondary targets. This increased acquisition and generalization, though some learners in the study required additional prompts to reach mastery in their secondary language
McGurk, S. R., & Mueser, K. T. (2025). Introduction to Special Issue: Recent Advances in Cognitive Remediation for Persons With Serious Mental Illness. Behavior Modification, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/01454455251371023
There are training methods to increase, for example, memory or attention; these are used successfully with people with mental illness
The Analysis of Verbal Behavior
9/2 Rajagopal, S., Nicholson, K., Hernandez, M. et al. Using Concealed Public Accompaniments to Teach Individuals to Tact Intensity. Analysis Verbal Behav (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40616-025-00222-0
The authors taught adults to tact different values of rough, heavy, and hot/cold, by having them put their hands in a box with the stimulus. The adults generalized the tacts to different body parts, and there was some unexpected generalization that differed between participants
The Psychological Record Volume 75, Issue 3 (14 articles, 4 open access)
Most intriguing: Emergence of Intraverbal Relations with Stimuli and Responses in a Foreign Language: Effects of Learning with Responses in Foreign or Native Language
(Open access) Preliminary evidence that learning tact relations between a native and foreign language works best when presenting native then foreign (e.g., cow...vaca)
Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders
9/1 Sterrett, K., Rogers, S.J., Estes, A. et al. Probability of Intervention Benefit in the Early Start Denver Model. J Autism Dev Disord (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10803-025-07031-3
85 autistic kids were divided into two groups: ESDM and community treatment. ESDM group saw 73% of kids improve their social communication based on a standardized scoring instrument, while 57% of the community treatment group improved. The largest difference was for the most severely impacted kids

Looming HHS Analysis Reportedly Will Tie Acetaminophen, Folate Deficiency as a Cause of Autism
Well they promised it would happen by September, and by jove, they've "done" "it." It is somehow less coherent than we had ever guessed. We have concluded that maternal fever, a long-known risk factor for ASD, has been misunderstood as caused by the treatment. Folate, which reduces birth defects from neural tube defects, has long been added to wheat and other products, so now it's your new magical horse dewormer. This has already caused Tylenol parent company stock to drop, so it's not all bad news
Accidentally behavior analysis
A mainstream news article that relates to behavior analysis
At 14, considered nonverbal and severely intellectually disabled; at 19, admitted to MIT, BoingBoing
Immediately this sounded like facilitated communication, a practice debunked in 1992 by Frontline in an excellent hour of TV, but which still exists in 2025 in the popular podcast The Telepathy Tapes. But scrubbing through the video, you will notice that this person communicates with their device without interference from a facilitator. Therefore, this is just…communication. This is what communication ought to look like. It’s great!
