Behavior Analysis in Practice
9/12 Haidar, B.S., Meadan, H. Navigating the Transition: Behavior Analysts’ Insights on Supporting Autistic Children Moving From Intensive Behavior Intervention to Public School. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01092-7
In this qualitative study, they interviewed 9 BCBAs about supporting kids entering school

Behavioral Interventions *
9/7 Aciu, Jenny-Lee A., Jason C. Vladescu, Jessica Day-Watkins, and Lauren K. Schnell-Peskin. 2025. “A Potential Life-Saving Skill: Teaching Caregivers to Perform Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.” Behavioral Interventions: e70038. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70038.
A previous study used a "feedback device" in teaching infant CPR; this study used BST with no feedback, and all participants met mastery criteria

9/12 Burren, Kelsey F., and Chata A. Dickson. 2025. Meta-Analysis of Function-Based Behavioral Treatment Outcomes in Acquired Brain Injury Rehabilitation Behavioral Interventions: e70034. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70034.
In a literature review of 47 studies, function-based treatments were more effective for people with acquired brain injury

Perspectives on Behavior Science
9/11 Plazas, E.A. Is Reference a Relation of Equivalence or Sameness?. Perspect Behav Sci (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-025-00473-1
(Open access) The author argues that when a speaker refers to a stimulus, it is not an equivalence relation

Behavior and Social Issues
9/9 Castro-Hostetler, M., Contreras, B.P. A Cultural Adaptation of Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACTr) for Latino Caregivers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Behav. Soc. Iss. (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s42822-025-00222-8
ACT with cultural adaptations saw increased value-directed actions and improvements in quality of life

Lee, B., Paliliunas, D. Examining Sexuality-Based Stereotypes Through a Relational Density Theory Framework. Behav. Soc. Iss. (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s42822-025-00220-w
Using a relational density theory scale, participants rated the relationships between words (e.g., gay & athletic), and participants rated "straight male" as positively related to various "positive" categories. After a brief ACT exercise, the same participants rated relations more equally

Behavior Modification *
9/10 Subotnik, K. L., Ventura, J., McEwen, S. C., Turner, L. R., Sturdevant, Y. R., Distler, M. G., Casaus, L. R., Zito, M. F., Hellemann, G. S., Sugar, C. A., Whelan, F. G., Niess, T. L., McGraw, E. A., & Nuechterlein, K. H. (2025). Aerobic Exercise Enhances the Impact of Cognitive Training on Positive Symptoms After a First Episode of Schizophrenia. Behavior Modification, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/01454455251371021
Online group training with 150 minutes/week of aerobic exercise was compared with online training alone, plus the two groups were randomly assigned risperidone or paliperidone. The training plus exercise group had fewer symptoms, and the medications did not have an additional effect

Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior * Volume 124, Issue 2 (11 articles, 6 open access)
Most intriguing: Polydrug abuse: Choice between drugs as a function of concurrent nonindependent ratio sizes
(Open access) Since a drug may not “work” the first time it is consumed, how does addiction develop? With multiple drugs consumed, when the “cost” is raised for the preferred drug, the less preferred drug will be consumed at higher rates, even after the price returns to normal

9/7 Toledo, A. C., Ávila, R., & Green, L. (2025). Undiscounted costs and socially discounted benefits modulate cooperation in one-shot and iterated prisoner's dilemma games. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70046. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70046
(Open access) Over 100 participants engaged in hypothetical prisoner's dilemma games, where the cost and benefits were manipulated. More benefits increased cooperation, while more cost decreased it, but this effect also increased over repeated games

9/8 Ayres-Pereira, V., & Arntzen, E. (2025). The go/no-go successive matching task and the emergence of arbitrary relational responding: A review. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70049. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70049
The authors reviewed 22 studies -- 9 with nonhumans and 13 with humans -- and compared the results for go/no-go successive matching. Humans were more likely to form equivalence relations. The authors believe this is either due to prerequisite skills or a need to standardize procedures

Yeh, Y.-H., Green, L., Myerson, J., Sheldon, M., & Basu, A. (2025). A discounting framework for trade-offs between risk and delay. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70052. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70052
Participants engaged in a hypothetical monetary discounting task with both time and probability. Time and probability had a linear relationship to discounting

9/9 Shahan, T. A., & Avellaneda, M. (2025). The extinction burst: Effects of alternative reinforcement magnitude. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70045. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70045
One model of an extinction burst says that it occurs because there is no competing reinforced operant behavior; the authors tested this model with rats. When lever pressing underwent extinction, there was a consistent extinction burst. Alternative reinforcement moderated extinction bursts

Fernandez, E. J., & Lattal, K. A. (2025). I'm Not Like the Others: Atypical Research Subjects in JEAB Publications. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70047. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70047
(Open access) Basic researchers are sometimes criticized for relying on rats or pigeons. The authors looked for articles in JEAB from 1958-2023 and found 65 species which did not include pigeons, rats, humans, or primates. These were generally early and later articles and may have included planaria and honey bees (or gray squirrels, in this issue!)

McGee, R. E., Petursdottir, A. I., Westerfield, C., Rohm, E., & Buss, E. M. (2025). Sources of Stimulus Control in Tests for Emergent Stimulus Relations. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70050. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70050
In experiment 1, one group was instructed with tacts for a match-to-sample task, while another group was instructed with intraverbals; when the groups engaged in the task and were engaged in a verbal-mediation disruption strategy (e.g., counting aloud while matching), the groups did not have differential performance. In experiment 2, similar groups were formed but for a visual task; the intraverbal group was slower at matching when the groups had their vision disrupted, which may indicate stimulus control

Cox, D. J. (2025). Extinction in Free-Ranging Aves in Competition with Sciurus carolinensis. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70053. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70053
Common birds and gray squirrels were observed thanks to a $150 bird feeder, allowing experimentation and data collection

Meisch, R. A., Gomez, T. H., & Lane, S. D. (2025). Polydrug abuse: Choice between drugs as a function of concurrent nonindependent ratio sizes. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70054. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70054
(Open access) Rhesus monkeys self-administered alcohol and cocaine or methadone. Alcohol was preferred until the ratios were increased, after which the secondary drug would be consumed more frequently, which remained true when ratios were decreased

Downey, H., Alvarez, A., Ji, W., Lozano, A., Hanlon, A., & Stein, J. S. (2025). Perceived reward certainty in the assessment of delay discounting. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70044. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70044
(Open access) Discounting tasks took place in two groups: one in which the probability was uncertain, and one in which the probability was stated. Delay caused both groups to perceive less certainty, but stating the certainty did not cause less discounting

Plazas, E. A., & Forigua, J. C. (2025). Select and reject conditional control on matching to sample and stimulus equivalence. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70051. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70051
(Open access) The authors tested formation of equivalence relations by select, reject, or mixed select/reject. They believe that standard match-to-sample training more closely resembles mixed select/reject training

Ruiz, D., Fox, A., & Rodriguez, R. N. (2025). Rule following as choice: The role of reinforcement rate and rule accuracy on rule-following behavior. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(2), e70048. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70048
(Open access) In a simulated task, participants behaved in accordance with rules that maximized reinforcement. In a later test, they preferred accurate rules, but again preferred rules that maximized reinforcement

Journal of Behavioral Education
9/11 Mahony-Atallah, K.E., McCallum, E., Schmitt, A.J. et al. A Virtual Implementation of the Performance Feedback Writing Fluency Intervention for Students with Disabilities: A Single-Case Design. J Behav Educ (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-025-09599-3
Virtual performance feedback was used with 3 students with disabilities in 2-3 grades. 1 student improved their writing, as measured by total words written and other measures of accuracy

9/12 Corr, F., Rispoli, M. & Welker, N.P. A Mega-Review of Functional Communication Training for Students with Disabilities in Educational Settings. J Behav Educ (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-025-09598-4
(Open access) In this review of reviews (a MEGA review), FCT is found to be efficacious, with some limitations, such as overrepresentation of male subjects

9/13 Chitiyo, A., Sciuchetti, M.B., Finch, H.W. et al. A Meta-analysis of Reading Interventions for Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders. J Behav Educ (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-025-09597-5
In this literature review (not MEGA), reading interventions for kids with EBD were shown to have a large effect

Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science
9/7 Third Wave Behavioral Interventions for Individuals with Dementia: A Systematic Review
(In press) Third-wave interventions for dementia are acceptable and feasible but with very limited evidence for efficacy; the authors found 10 studies total

9/10 An idiographic comparison of ACT focused on repetitive negative thinking versus non-directive therapy in child generalized anxiety
(In press) (Open access) Non-directive therapy "is often used as a psychological placebo intervention," and ACT was found to be superior

A mainstream news article that relates to behavior analysis

How Cigar Factory ‘Readers’ Shaped Cuban Political Movements, Atlas Obscura
Cuban cigar factories in the 1800s had “lectors,” a person who read to the workers, kind of like a literate Joe Rogan. They would read poetry, announcements for workers, news, and literature. Is learning freeing the oppressed?
