Behavior Analysis in Practice
10/20 Diller, J.W., Mehta, C.M. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis for Behavior Analysts. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01109-1
Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) appears to be focused on explaining an individual experience without producing "objective" data; for example, experiencing pain
Badgett, N.M., Stegenga, S.M. & Contreras, B.P. Lessons from Implementation Science: Incorporating Qualitative Methods to Bridge the Research-to-Practice Gap in Applied Behavior Analysis. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01112-6
Qualitative research can help explain why people don't implement effective interventions, which remains a problem
Li, A., Pham, T.M., Blake, J.F. et al. The Gender Pay Gap for Behavior Analysis Faculty: A 2024 Update. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01110-8
The authors find that nearly 2/3 of faculty are female, and gender does not predict salary. Program and rank predicted salary, which appear to not have kept pace with inflation
Jones, S.H., Brand, D. & Abuin, S. Utility of Qualitative Methods to Expand Behavior-Analytic Perspectives: A Reflection. Behav Analysis Practice (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-025-01108-2

Behavioral Interventions *
10/20 Livingston, Cynthia P., Brittany H. Loder-Lafferty, Jessica P. Tran, Isaac J. Melanson, Mirela Cengher, and Daniel Kwak. 2025. “ Evaluation of a Sequential Extinction Procedure on Preference for Communication Modalities During Functional Communication Training,” Behavioral Interventions: e70053. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70053
(Open access) The authors taught multiple mand modalities (e.g., vocal word, sign, PECS) for functions maintained by challenging behavior, measured preference for each based on usage, then put some on extinction sequentially to see if there was a hierarchy. They found that participants had preferences in modalities and hierarchies, and in some cases challenging behaviors resurged when FCRs were placed on extinction. However this effect was small and typically temporary, indicating that multiple mand modalities could make for better and more durable treatment
10/21 Morosohk, Ellie, Raymond Miltenberger, Rasha Baruni, and Jennifer Cook. 2025. “ Behavioral Skills Training to Increase Fidelity of Staff Searches at a Juvenile Residential Facility,” Behavioral Interventions: e70055. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70055
Interesting to note that searches took less time when an observer was not present, until a feedback phase was used. Even cops wanna rush through enforcing the dominant social hierarchy
10/23 Li, Yan, Sheng Xu, and Gabrielle T. Lee. 2025. “ The Effects of Response-Stimulus Pairing on Toy Play and Stereotypy in Three Children on the Autism Spectrum in China,” Behavioral Interventions: e70056. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.70056
The authors paired verbal praise and edibles with toy play, which increased toy play and decreased stereotypy
Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
10/21 Gildea, M., Gutierrez, B., Hibshman, A., & Sanabria, F. (2025). Spatially extended instrumental responses are organized in functional bouts. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(3), e70058. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70058
Responses are typically clustered (bouts), but what if that is because, in a rat or pigeon experiment, the animal has to be close to the lever to press it? In experiment 1, rats had to alternate levers on 2 sides of a cage, and in experiment 2, they had a condition with levers on either side of a cage or just 1 lever. In both cases, responding was in bouts, so proximity is not a factor
10/23 Williams, C. L., & Roop, J. C. (2025). Instruction consisting of a rule and set of examples and nonexamples reliably teaches concepts. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(3), e70061. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70061
(Open access) This is the framework used by Engelmann and Carnine, Tiemann and Markle, and other instructional designers. It rapidly produced concept formation when used before or after practice, while practice alone did not result in concept formation
Romanowich, P., Wilson, K. G., Kretchmar-Hendricks, M., Medina, A. M., & Arpin, S. (2025). In Memoriam: Professor Sam Leigland (1950–2025). Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 124(3), e70062. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.70062

(Open access) In 30 studies across 12 countries, the most impactful implementations have been in "the Nordic countries and the Netherlands."
10/24 Robertson, R. E., Buonomo, K., Rowe, D., & Zhang, X. (2025). Communities of Research and Practice Supporting Positive Behavior in Students With Autism and Intellectual Disabilities: Results of a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007251373060
Teachers in special ed report that dealing with challenging behavior is the most difficult aspect of their work, but also report not using evidence-based practices. The authors formed a monthly peer group for teachers to share EBP, which did not increase knowledge or practice of EBP. The teachers did report less challenging behavior, which means 1) a placebo effect, 2) teachers just need someone to talk to, and/or 3) nobody needs EBP
Education and Treatment of Children
10/19 Greenwood, C.R., Thiemann-Bourque, K. & Spencer, T. Introduction to Juniper Gardens Children’s Project (JGCP) Special Issue. Educ. Treat. Child. (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s43494-025-00170-3

10/20 Sheridan, D.J., Anderson, A.N. & Rapp, J.T. Exploring the Clinical Utility of the Generalized Pliance and Tracking Questionnaires for Children among Justice-Involved Youth. Psychol Rec (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-025-00662-z
(Open access) 40 incarcerated youth filled out 2 questionnaires 4 times over the course of a year. These measured rule-following and responsiveness to environmental contingencies. These scores were compared to the facility assignment of colors for behavior (e.g., green is meeting expectations) and found no overall correlation, though low scores were associated with larger changes in behavior over time
Journal of Behavioral Education
10/22 Rodriguez, N., Ferris, E., O’Neill, P. et al. Toward a Better Understanding of Meaningful Differences in the Adapted Alternating Treatments Design. J Behav Educ (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-025-09607-6
The authors tested the length to acquisition of similar sets of targets using identical teaching procedures. Some sets were mastered more quickly. In an adapted alternating treatments design, wherein different procedures are tested, differences in acquisition may be attributed to the teaching procedures, when in reality there may be some variation in learning rate
10/25 LaBrot, Z.C., Garza, B.D., Rodriguez, L. et al. Impact of Behavioral Skills Training on Assistant Teachers’ Use of Positive Greetings at the Door. J Behav Educ (2025). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-025-09606-7
Ok so BST can increase friendly greetings, but what can it do for cops?
Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science
10/24 Executive functioning and relational framing in verbal adults
(In press) (Open access) In comparing measures of executive functioning and relational framing in a sample of 42 adults, the authors found a correlation for perseverative errors, but not for overall performance

How Autism Providers Are Navigating Payer Rate Compression, Quality Pressures
Payers want to pay less while requiring more of everything (documentation, outcome measures, massages). An exec at Acorn Health believes that this is a time to provide more services, because more equals better than. Meanwhile, maybe once in a while you should be rude about reimbursement

The radical 1960s schools experiment that created a whole new alphabet – and left thousands of children unable to spell, The Guardian
In England in the 1960s, a new alphabet was briefly piloted in some schools. While English is a bit of a mess – a holdover from its origins as a consolidation of several languages – teaching a new alphabet that is not used anywhere resulted in an irony: the children taught the new letters often fell behind. Superficially the invented letters reminded us of Zig Engelmann’s Direct Instruction alphabet (which is designed to be faded and did not cause learners to fall behind).
