Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis *
8/6 Frank-Crawford, M. A., Piersma, D. E., Fernandez, N., Tate, S. A., & Bustamante, E. A. (2024). Protective procedures in functional analysis of self-injurious behavior: An updated scoping review. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–19. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2906
In FA literature, the authors find that safety precautions are not always described, though that is improving over time
Tyner, B. C., Floumanhaft, S. D., Marin, R., & Fienup, D. M. (2024). Optimizing task-analysis instruction: Effects of descriptions and pictures of antecedent stimuli and outcomes. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–16. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2904
The authors produced various task analyses of graphing instructions; the most effective included pictures of antecedent and consequent stimuli for the graphing task
8/7 Wiley, J. C., Miltenberger, R. G., & Tai, S. (2024). Behavioral skills training produces acquisition and generalization of run-blocking skills of high school football players. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–10. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2908
BST slightly improved football players' skills from training to a scrimmage, and further improved when the BST was implemented within the scrimmage. Does this reduce TBI? Well,
Shaw, S. K. G., Posey, J. L., Zane, T., & Weiss, M. J. (2024). Comparing interteaching and discussion forums in an asynchronous online classroom. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–10. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2905
Interteaching (akin to a complex group discussion) is compared to discussion forum posts; interteaching had a greater impact on quiz scores
Behavior Analysis in Practice
8/6 Chin, Y.C., Luna, O. & Witts, B.N. A Preliminary Investigation of Long-Term Maintenance of a Parent-Implemented Physical Activity Intervention for Adolescents Diagnosed with ASD. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00970-w
Two families implemented "all day" interventions aimed at increasing physical activity, which included goal-setting, feedback, reinforcement, and self-monitoring. Both increased their activity levels, and after adjusting to fit their needs (I have to assume this means "doing less activity") maintained for months afterward
Slanzi, C.M., Fernand, J.K. On the Use and Benefits of Electronic Data Collection Systems: A Tutorial on Countee. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00964-8
A tutorial for a free data collection app called Countee (Android/iOS)
8/8 Glodowski, K.R., Hockenberry, N.L., Anthony, D. et al. Disseminating Ethical Applied Behavior Analysis within a Human-Service Organization: A Tutorial. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00966-6
The authors describe setting up an ethics network in their organization. See the appendices for discussion topics they used in meetings
Hawkins-Lear, S., Grisham, J. & Shepley, C. Differential Effects of Peer Presence Variations during Embedded Instruction for Preschoolers with Intensive Needs. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00975-5
The authors conducted two teaching conditions: peers present, and peers absent. Both conditions were the same, suggesting that concerns about the presence of peers were unfounded. The authors made their data set available here
8/9 Migan-Gandonou Horr, J.A., Campos, C. Effects of a Technology-Based Self-Management Intervention on Social Media Use in a College Student. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00977-3
Self-management plus delays to access reduced problematic social media usage to zero
Behavioral Interventions *
8/5 Koldas, M., Sahin, S., & Lechago, S. (2024). Teaching Turkish children to mand for information in the context of tact instruction. Behavioral Interventions, e2046. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.2046
(Open access) "What is this?" was a response embedded into mand training, and was acquired, generalized, and judged as socially acceptable to families
8/8 Graham, S., Keenan, M., & Dillenburger, K. (2024). All for one and one for all: The good inclusion game. Behavioral Interventions, e2048. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.2048
(Open access) The Good Inclusion Game (GIG) is like the Good Behavior Game, but it makes the class into one team and it encourages prosocial behavior. It works and it maintained over time
Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
8/4 Staddon, J. (2024), A broken thread: A review of Pavlov's Legacy: How and What Animals Learn. By Robert A. Boakes. J Exp Anal Behav. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4203
The reviewer mentions a few interesting books about Pavlov
8/8 Schlinger, H. D. Jr., & Blakely, E. (2024). A mediational theory of equivalence relations and transformation of function. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–17. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4204
(Open access) The authors propose a theory of mediated responding that suggests that "derived" relations may not exist. To summarize, covert verbal behavior (e.g., "repeating to oneself," or a covert echoic) may mediate a reinforced response, meaning there is no "untrained" step
Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science
8/5 The Mindful Healthcare Scale (MHS): Development and Initial Validation
(In press) (Open access) A measure of psychological flexibility for healthcare workers
8/6 Coping with Emotional Pain: An Experimental Comparison of Acceptance vs. Avoidance Coping
(In press) Participants were taught skills to avoid emotional pain, and to accept it. Acceptance produced a lower level of physiological activation, though the authors found challenges with adherence to instructions
8/10 Brief transdiagnostic group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for acute inpatients with complex mental health conditions: a randomised pilot study using an active social control
(In press) It work
European Journal of Behavior Analysis
8/9 Aparecida Passarelli, D., Mizael, T. M., Silvestre, M. H., & de Rose, J. C. (2024). Examining implicit and explicit anti-Black racial bias in children: A repeated measure design using the Function Acquisition Speed Test (FAST). European Journal of Behavior Analysis, 1–21. https://doi.org/10.1080/15021149.2024.2388487
34 children rated Black and White faces on a 5-point scale. No explicit bias was found (presumably in similar scores), but across test conditions, 11/34 children rated with differential speed, implying an implicit anti-Black bias

The Most Revealing Moment of a Trump Rally: A close reading of the prayers delivered before the former president speaks, The Atlantic
Indeed, rather than asking God to make Trump an instrument of his will, most of the prayers start from the assumption that he already is. Accordingly, many of them drop any pretense of thy-will-be-done nonpartisanship, and ask explicitly for Trump’s reelection.
Skinner described prayer as a type of mand. What, then, of this type of mand? It’s certainly clear that the mand itself betrays honesty: the primary function is reelection of a politician, as opposed to moral behavior by that politician.

Flashback
In 2007, a visionary applied programmed instruction to the internet
2007 was the year of the Rickroll, MySpace, and Windows Vista. It was also the year that Reinaldo L. Canton published a book describing methods to adapt the proven success of Programmed Instruction to the internet – this before the total number of students enrolled in any type of distance learning was below 20%. (But uhh it looks like he’s not allowed to use the internet anymore [TW]) And yet to this day, online universities teaching behavior analysis fail to apply the principles of learning discovered nearly a century ago. I’m ready to start my consulting work with Purdue University Global.
