Abraham Graber worries that if we pressure families too much to avoid non-evidence based practices, they may feel coerced
12/4 Chastain, A.N., Dixon, M.R. Development of a Generalized Deictic Framing Repertoire in an Autistic Child. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-01017-w

Zane, T. Ethics Dialogue: Spelling to Communicate – Reply by Thomas Zane. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-01023-y

The Analysis of Verbal Behavior
12/4 Frampton, S.E., Axe, J.B. A Preliminary Investigation into Teaching Adolescents with Autism to Use Apps to Solve Problems. Analysis Verbal Behav (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40616-024-00212-8
The authors taught two teens to answer questions using smartphone apps for maps, weather, and time, alongside worksheet questions (e.g., "What time is it in Cairo?" See the worksheets in the supplemental info). One teen generalized the skill quickly, while the second required more training
12/6 McCammon, M.N., Wolfe, K. & Check, A.R. A Review of the Environmental Variables Included in Mand Training Interventions. Analysis Verbal Behav (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40616-024-00211-9
In a literature review of 45 mand training studies with 118 preschool-aged participants, the authors find that most studies use a preference assessment, manipulate MOs, and manipulate consequences. They also note a failure to teach under both EO and AO conditions, as well as a failure to observe interactions with purported reinforcers
The Psychological Record
12/2 Reyes-Huerta, H.E., Calvillo, A., Tovar, E. et al. A Pilot Study of Delay Discounting of Real and Hypothetical Lego Bricks by Children: Systematicity of Data Depends on Task Type. Psychol Rec (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-024-00619-8
The authors conducted a real delay-discounting task plus a hypothetical task. The real-life task was hyperbolically discounted (consistent with other literature) but the hypothetical task was not, indicating that perhaps the kids had challenges with a hypothetical task
Harte, C., Barnes-Holmes, D., Sivaraman, M. et al. Leave Your Weapons at the Door: Introduction to the Special Issue on Modern Behavior Analyses of Human Language and Cognition. Psychol Rec (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-024-00620-1

Payers Persistently Dodge Substance Use Disorder Treatment Mandates, AMA Report Says
Treating addiction costs money, but typically it is an immense savings over letting someone go untreated. But what would be the treatment?
Contingency management is twice as effective as other [stimulus-use disorder] treatments, according to the AMA. Despite its efficacy, less than 10% of SUD treatment programs offer contingency management.

Special Education Services With a Catch: Parents Are Asked Not to Sue, NYT
Do you know how, when you sign up for a Verizon account, they make you sign a paper that says you have to take everything to a Verizon-chosen mediator? Well, now NYC schools have you sign the same agreement, but instead of a 1-year contract and an iPhone, it’s for your child’s education. But since parents are suing Lucy Calkins over her badly-designed curriculum, maybe this is actually the smart move.
