Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis *
7/1 Fanning Tacoaman, G. L., Rosales, R., & Shvarts, S. (2024). Evaluation of a training package to teach pairing procedures. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–12. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.1097
(Open access) In order to standardize a process for pairing, the authors trained staff using a video model with a voiceover and performance feedback; the intervention worked, maintained, and increased desired measurement of interactions with children

7/4 Seward, R., & Redner, R. (2024). A replication of extended implementation and social interaction during the Step it UP! Game for adults with disabilities. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–16. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.1098
The game: two groups of adults compete to have the highest step count, and the winners are entered into a prize drawing. The authors also tried a longer and more challenging game, as well as adding contingent attention. The longer game worked, but the attention had no effect

7/2 Perrin, C. J., Metz, J., & Kettering, T. L. (2024). A preliminary analysis of computer-based asynchronous awareness training for public speaking disfluencies. Behavioral Interventions, e2039. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.2039
4 participants took a short asynchronous training where they read a definition of speech disfluencies and scored a video. Their speech disfluencies decreased

Perspectives on Behavior Science
7/1 Hackenberg, T.D. Adding Tools to the Behavioral Toolkit. Perspect Behav Sci (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-024-00413-5
A short introduction to a special issue

Bodily, J.S., Bodily, K.D. Human Behavior in Suboptimal Choice Tasks: Defining Optimality. Perspect Behav Sci (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-024-00411-7
If there are two choices, more unsignaled reinforcement or less signaled reinforcement, rats and pigeons choose the signaled reinforcement -- suboptimal. Humans do not typically choose suboptimal reinforcement. In an experiment, some human subjects chose suboptimal reinforcers more frequently than expected, which the authors argue is a function of their learning history

7/2 Musquez, M., Rasmussen, E.B. Food Cue Reactivity Meets the Reinforcer Pathology Model: Behavioral Economic Measures of Cue-Induced Changes in Food Reinforcer Efficacy. Perspect Behav Sci (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-024-00409-1
(Open access) The authors find some evidence that, in rats and humans, food cues (sights, smells, etc.) lead to greater delay discounting in binge-eating prone rats and in humans with binge-eating disorders

7/3 Willis-Moore, M.E., Haynes, J.M., Frye, C.C.J. et al. Recent Experience Affects Delay Discounting: Evidence across Temporal Framing, Signs, and Magnitudes. Perspect Behav Sci (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-024-00412-6
In experiment 1, when a timeframe was specified before a date (e.g., 1 week, July 21) there was less discounting than when only the date was used -- but there was no effect when the order was reversed (e.g., July 21, 1 week), which may have been a carryover effect. In experiment 2, when using a value of $10 and $100, the presentation similarly affected discounting -- presenting $100 first caused $10 to be steeply discounted, and presenting $10 first caused $100 to be less steeply discounted

In what sounds like a strict literature review (using PRISMA, Cochrane, and WWC guidelines), 9 articles were ultimately identified and discussed

7/2 Tereshko, L.M., Weiss, M.J., Cross, S. et al. Culturally Diverse Student Engagement in Online Higher Education: A Review. J Behav Educ (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-024-09554-8
In a literature review, 31 studies had recommendations for increasing cultural diversity, including training, attention to language, and modifying courses

Learn Behavioral Says Its Hungry to Grow, but Steadily Profitable

In the ensuing decade, Learn Behavioral experienced three changes in ownership, each involving a different private equity company. Milestone Partners bought Learn Behavioral in 2010, followed by KKR Partners acquiring a majority stake in 2016. In 2019, San Francisco-based Gryphon Investors became the majority owner, with New York City-based KKR Partners retaining a minority stake.

And yet, based on the headline, I’d guess they’re pitching themselves to more investors. Why? Uh…they’re profitable I guess.

Teaching basketball to kids in the US is becoming a bit muddled, and the NBA is seeking solutions, AP News
Suppose you want to teach a kid to love the sport of basketball, and you show them a highlight reel; now they want to play like the pros, so to keep them interested, you let them launch 3-pointers, and you don’t worry about dribbling, lay-ups, or passing.
Suppose you want to teach a kid to love reading, so you expose them to wonderful stories; now they want to read those stories, so to keep them interested, you let them guess at the pictures in the book, and you don’t worry about phonics.

Flashback

Suppose you want your child to be smart, and even confident…as it turns out, teaching basic skills improves basic skills, but also global cognitive measures (e.g., IQ) and even measures of affect. Could it be that mastering initial skills makes kids better at more skills later on, and mastery makes them feel confident?
