The owners of a substance-abuse recovery app argue that their positive push notifications are good. I guess I have mixed feelings about this company

Is this just "drive reduction"?

Behavior Analysis in Practice
9/30 Sheen, H., Vause, T., Neil, N. et al. Functional Analysis and Treatment of Hoarding in a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00967-5
A 12 year old autistic girl who had challenging hoarding behavior was assessed with an FA, which found possible attention and automatic components. The treatment was differential reinforcement, rules, and criteria, which was effective and acceptable to the girl and her family

Behavioral Interventions *
9/30 McKinnon, K., Cihon, J. H., & McEachin, J. (2024). A programmatic description of an early, intensive behavioral intervention program in Australia. Behavioral Interventions, e2060. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.2060
A summary of findings from Autism Partnership in Australia over 11 years and 154 clients found that, in EIBI, older age at intake led to greater gains (presumably due to greater deficits). Kids averaged 27 hours per week for 1 year. They compare rate of progress to the kids' rate of learning before intervention (presumably extrapolated from their Vineland scores?) and make a point of not comparing the kids to a norm-referenced sample or waitlist group, but this comes with its own issues

10/5 Thillainathan, T., Linder, B., & Cox, A. D. (2024). Program evaluation of a specialized treatment home for adults with severe challenging behavior. Behavioral Interventions, e2059. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.2059
(Open access) 8 adults in a residential setting with severe problem behaviors were treated with a package that included restraint contingent upon noncompliance (???). Under "Phase 1": "Importantly, one hand was always unrestricted so that participants could complete tasks. Restraint application permitted the DR programming element by supporting return to task and/or appropriate, alternative replacement behavior, which were then reinforced." This was not preceded by a real FA, but a normal trash indirect FBA. Is this how they do things in Canada?

Arthur, S. M., Leaf, J. B., Milne, C., Fuhrmann-Knowles, A., Creem, A. N., Cihon, J. H., Reed, F. D. D., & Weiss, M. J. (2024). A comparison of staff training procedures to teach flexible prompt fading. Behavioral Interventions, e2061. https://doi.org/10.1002/bin.2061
In back-to-back APF papers, the authors compared BST to "a progressive approach" to training staff to implement "flexible prompt fading." This all does sound essentially like the APF "progressive" approach generally, and in fact these treatments are all mentioned in the "Australia" article

Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
9/29 Grisante, P. C., & Tomanari, G. Y. (2024). Inducing select/reject control in a matching-to-sample procedure with observing response: Effects on stimulus equivalence. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–13. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4215
Four 8-10 year old girls completed a computer task where they matched according to select control (correct stimulus is displayed first) or reject control (stimulus is displayed last). In both conditions, they developed a stimulus equivalence class

The Analysis of Verbal Behavior
9/30 Dingus, C.S., Hanson, R.J., Miguel, C.F. et al. Verbal Mediation During Auditory Equivalence Class Formation Using Go/No-Go Successive Matching-to-Sample. Analysis Verbal Behav (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40616-024-00209-3
(Open access) In typical tests of verbal mediation of stimulus class formation, participants are asked to speak aloud during their selections; the authors hypothesize that in later testing trials, this hinders performance. In this study, they gave extra training prior to the talk-aloud condition and found better performance than past studies, which they believe confirms their hypothesis

The Psychological Record
10/1 Baca-Zeff, S., Rodriguez, L.R., Lee, Y. et al. To What Extent Are College Students’ Delay Discounting and Systematic Responding Rates Related to Time of Semester?. Psychol Rec (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-024-00609-w
(Open access) College students, on hypothetical discounting tasks throughout a semester, typically discount money at a consistent rate, but discount food more sharply at the end of a semester

Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science
10/1 Exploring the interconnectedness of depression, anxiety, diabetes distress, and related psychosocial factors in adults with Type 2 Diabetes: a network analysis
Psychological flexibility and social support appear to be most impactful on mental health challenges

Behind the Glamour: Why Luxury Rehab Centers Have Lost Their Appeal
Flying to a new, expensive environment would be a great solution – if you didn’t just head right back to where you started, the environment with all the same cues as before. Meanwhile, a very effective and cheap program – contingency management – pops up in the news every few months because even though we know it works, communities hate it. Therefore, the better business investment is less effective.

Accidentally behavior analysis

A mainstream news article that relates to behavior analysis

A Poetry Critic Looks at Elon Musk’s Awful Poem: The world’s richest man has taken to verse, and the results are just as unpleasant as the rest of his ideas. Current Affairs
Skinner delivered a lecture, “On having a poem,” (Page 522 to read it, or here to listen to it) that is clearly describing his position of “Beyond Freedom and Dignity” – a woman “has” a baby, but took no conscious action to design the baby, in much the same way that a poet “has” a poem. A modern retelling of this tale might be “There is no such thing as a bad boy: The Circumstances View of problem behavior” by Pat Friman, who is no more responsible for his article than was Skinner for his lecture. Then again, what if your poem is almost a war crime?
