Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis *
11/5 Kamlowsky, M. E., Dozier, C. L., Leslie, S. C., Kanaman, K. C., & Diaz de Villegas, S. C. (2024). Effects of social interaction on leisure item preference and reinforcer efficacy for children with autism. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–19. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2919
The authors tested social and tangible reinforcers in isolation, and synthesized. They found that synthesized reinforcers increased in value for some reinforcers and for some subjects. Interestingly, synthesized reinforcers resulted in false-negatives for some preference assessments

11/7 Salzer, A. R., Dozier, C. L., DiGennaro Reed, F. D., & Reed, D. D. (2024). Functional analysis and treatment of problem behavior by domesticated canines. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–15. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2921
Trial-based and standard FA was used for dogs, and matched for all subjects, therefore trial-based FA would be an efficient method for assessing dog behavior

Behavior Analysis in Practice
11/5 Yingling, M.E., Ruther, M.H. & Dubuque, E.M. County Variation in the Supervision of Registered Behavior Technicians for the Provision of ABA Services in the United States. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00996-0
In a nationwide survey, half of US counties do not have an active RBT, and nearly a quarter have neither a BCBA/BCaBA nor an RBT

11/6 Ghaemmaghami, M., Ruppel, K., Cammilleri, A.P. et al. Toward Compassion in the Assessment and Treatment of Severe Problem Behavior. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-01012-1
The FTF group argue that ABA has not always been appropriately focused on social significance of treatment

Schroeder, A.C., Peterson, S.M., Mahabub, M.B. et al. A Pilot Evaluation of Expert and Novice Use of the Functional Analysis Risk Assessment Decision Tool. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-01006-z
The FARADT (available here under "ESM 2") decreased variability and increased validity of risk scores from novices

Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
11/4 Naudé, G. P., Strickland, J. C., Berry, M. S., Dolan, S. B., Cox, D. J., & Johnson, M. W. (2024). Experience with reduced-nicotine cigarettes and whether this decreases smoking and substitution for full-nicotine cigarettes. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–15. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4223
When full- and reduced-nicotine cigarettes were concurrently available, the demand for full-nicotine cigarettes was reduced and reduced-nicotine cigarettes were partially substitutable, suggesting nicotine content is not wholly responsible for maintaining established smoking behavior

Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions *
11/7 Paananen, M., Karhu, A., Tolvanen, A., & Savolainen, H. (2024). Examining Immediate and Sustained Effects of Check-In/Check-Out in Finnish Elementary Schools. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007241275679
(Open access) In Finland, Check In/Check Out (CICO) was implemented in 51 elementary schools as a tier 2 intervention; an analysis finds that significant positive effects on behavior occurred after 1 week and remained stable

Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science
11/6 Physiological, Behavioral, and Self-Report Outcomes of Acceptance- and Regulation-Based Exposure for Intrusive Thoughts
(In press) In exposure therapy, people with intrusive thoughts were placed in acceptance, regulation, and control groups. The treatment groups had better outcomes than the control group, and the acceptance group was less sweaty than the regulation group. This lends support to the ACT notion that acceptance leads to less distress (as measured by physiological arousal)

ACT in school settings: A pilot study of ACT-based universal group psycho-educational program among Japanese early adolescents.
(Open access) (In press) In short group sessions with Japanese teens, ACT was effective by some measures

11/8 Web-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for adults living with cancer: A Single Case Experimental Design (SCED)
(Open access) (In press) In 7 adults with cancer, a low-intensity online ACT program was found to be acceptable, and for more than half of the participants reduced symptoms of depression, increased quality of life, reduced impact of fatigue, and increased psychological flexibility

European Journal of Behavior Analysis
11/7 Casarini, F., Du, L., & Galanti, E. (2024). Low-intensity ABA intervention for young children with ASD in Italy. European Journal of Behavior Analysis, 1–18. https://doi.org/10.1080/15021149.2024.2417494
In Italy, kids typically get 1-3 hours of weekly services total (!). The authors used the CABAS model to deliver ABA for 12 hours per week to 7 kids for 1 year and found improvements in various domains

Accidentally behavior analysis

A mainstream news article that relates to behavior analysis

Analyses of relational coherence and rule following: Consistent liars are preferred over occasional truth tellers, JEAB (Open access)

OK, so this isn’t a mainstream news article – it’s a somewhat recent translational experiment about what we might call “correspondence” between spoken language and actual events. Why might people prefer consistent lies, as compared with occasional lies? The logical conclusion is that consistent lying is predictable in the exact way that consistent honesty is predictable. What this has to do with current events, who can really say?

Flashback

Self-management for behavior analysts

Most behavior analytic books focus on other people. But you’re saying, “I want to read a book about self-management without the involvement of Jordan Peterson.” Edward Sarafino wrote such a book in 2011. (Dennis Reid has something similar; Watson & Tharp too)
