Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis *
5/28 Slaton, J. D., Davis, M., DePetris, D. A., Raftery, K. J., Daniele, S., & Caruso, C. M. (2024). Long-term effectiveness and generality of practical functional assessment and skill-based treatment. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–22. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.1090
IISCA and SBT were used in a school and treatment maintained 1 year later

5/29 Laureano, B., Ringdahl, J., & Falligant, J. M. (2024). Examination of clinical variables affecting resurgence: A reanalysis of 46 applications. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–9. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.1091
In examining 46 cases in an inpatient setting, the authors find that only the decrement in reinforcement involved in schedule thinning had a relationship to resurgence

5/31 Laske, M. M., & DiGennaro Reed, F. D. (2024). Um, so, like, do speech disfluencies matter? A parametric evaluation of filler sounds and words. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–10. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.1093
High rates of disfluencies (12 per minute) impact listener perception of effectiveness in an online survey. 5 or fewer do not impact listener rating, implying it is important for public speakers to reduce disfluencies to this level

Behavior Analysis in Practice

(Open access) Practitioners can be trained to work with interpreters, who rate practitioners as better after the training. However, parents do not rate the practitioners as improved

Behavioral Interventions *

Using the PDC-HS (available here) to evaluate and improve token delivery worked better than non-indicated interventions

Behavior Modification *

After a functional assessment, children were treated with awareness training, a DRO, and schedule thinning, and found a 99% reduction in motor stereotypy

The Analysis of Verbal Behavior
5/28 Méndez, D.R. Toward a Procedure to Study Rule-Governed Choice: Preliminary Data. Analysis Verbal Behav (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40616-024-00206-6
(Open access) When instructed about a relative reinforcement rate of 2 options, participants choose the option which they were told was reinforced at a higher rate. When not instructed, participants gradually choose the option with the higher reinforcement rate. If this isn’t a replication, I must be missing something

The Psychological Record
5/28 Belke, T.W., McClelland, C.H. Operant Wheel Running on a Fixed Interval Schedule: Does Contingent Sucrose Reinforcement Increase Running through a Schedule-Induction or Reinforcement Effect?. Psychol Rec (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-024-00599-9
Some behavior is schedule-induced, meaning it occurs in a certain pattern due to the schedule of reinforcement itself (an example is that rats deprived of food will run on a wheel if wheel running is reinforced by access to food, but if the food is available only for short periods then the rat will run excessively and even avoid the food, a phenomenon known as activity anorexia). Is sucrose, available as a consequence for wheel running, maintaining running due to a reinforcing effect or a schedule effect? Wheel running increases towards the end of the reinforcement interval, consistent with a reinforcement effect

Alves, C., Donadeli, J.M. & de Rose, J.C. Do–Say Correspondence in Adults: Audience Control in a Virtual Game. Psychol Rec (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-024-00598-w
In a game, a rule was provided that collecting a certain item was punished, and certain characters were given different probabilities of punishing the player for breaking the rule. Some players broke the rule, and some "lied" (e.g., reported to characters that they did not break the rule), with the most lies towards the punitive characters. However there were lies told to the nonpunitive characters, despite none of the characters punishing the player in the game, which implies verbal rules and previous learning history  interfering with actual contingencies; the appendix has a lot of details about the game

Accidentally behavior analysis

A mainstream news article that relates to behavior analysis

A California school is addressing chronic absenteeism at the root, NPR
It’s well-known that, post-pandemic, schools are facing chronic absenteeism. Most schools send you a mildly rude letter stating that your child is “truant” (essentially a CMO-T signaling a possible worsening of environmental factors) or a principal writes a school-wide email to parents that is best summarized as “your kids really oughta wanna” (essentially an antecedent rule-based intervention, using coercion). Imagine my surprise when a school in Livingston, California attempted to make school a place where kids want to go (incidentally, people should be choosing treatment).

Flashback

Half a century later, have we made school a place where kids want to go? At least, besides Livingston, California.
