Behavior Analysis in Practice
10/21 Lewis, T.K., Cariveau, T., Brown, A. et al. Efficacy of Strategic Incremental Rehearsal in a Word List. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00999-x
In children with reading difficulty, using strategic incremental rehearsal (SIR) with a word list (e.g., adding more words when some are mastered) resulted in effective instruction
Aquino, S.C., Hood, S.A., Fahmie, T.A. et al. Evaluating the Efficacy of and Preference for Interactive Computer Training with Student-Generated Examples. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-01007-y
A previous study found that students like peer-generated examples of behavioral concepts, but that those did not enhance learning. In this study, peer-generated examples were used in interactive computer training, and compared to text and video examples. Again, students rated them highly but it did not improve learning outcomes -- which is generally true when it comes to preferences and outcomes
10/24 Nevill, R.E., Crawford, M.F., Zarcone, J.R. et al. A Retrospective Consecutive Controlled Case Series Analysis of the Assessment and Treatment of Elopement in Children with Autism in an Inpatient Setting. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00979-1
(Open access) 17 function-based treatments for 14 kids (?) at Kennedy Krieger were evaluated and find: tangibles is the most common function (none for escape!); all treatments were packages using antecedents and consequences; treatments generally involved DR, FCT, and extinction
Pickard, K., Islam, N., Green, N. et al. The Challenges Associated with Changing Practice: Barriers to Implementing Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions in ABA Settings. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-01011-2
In 18 interviews, the authors find that barriers to implementing NDBIs include a lack of training, mixed attitudes about NDBIs, and what I think is describing a need to clearly define goals to a funding source
10/26 Evanko, C.D., Matthews, K. & Caruso-Anderson, M. Going Beyond the Code: A Guide to Teaching Decision Trees to Affect Students’ Ethical Choice-Making Behavior. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-01008-x

Joslyn & Morris respectfully disagree with criticisms of risk ratio application put forth by Newland. Shots fired!
Behavior and Social Issues
10/26 McMahon, M.X.H., Ardoin, S.P. & Volkert, V.M. Increasing Independence in Meals Using Say-Do Correspondence Training. Behav. Soc. Iss. (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s42822-024-00184-3
Correspondence training is when you provide reinforcement for a person doing what they said they would do; the authors used this method for self-feeding for a child with a restrictive diet and found that he increased consumption of novel foods. Importantly this was a method acceptable to the caregiver
Sheridan, D.J., Anderson, A.N., Rapp, J.T. et al. Teaching Justice-Involved Adolescents Basic Financial Literacy Skills: A Preliminary Investigation. Behav. Soc. Iss. (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s42822-024-00188-z Using video modules, guided notes, and an activity, kids in a juvenile detention facility increased their knowledge on post-tests about financial literacy. Links to the videos are in a document in the supplemental info. This sounded familiar, maybe because Rapp did similar work recently with interview skills?
Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
10/23 Condurú Melo, E. A., Fonseca-Júnior, A. R., & de Carvalho-Neto, M. B. (2024). Avoidance of hot air blast in Rattus norvegicus. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–10. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4225
The authors trained rats to press a lever to avoid a hot air blast, which they typically did, implying that a hot air blast is aversive
10/24 DeWitt, S., & Briggs, A. M. (2024). Evaluation of resurgence following differential reinforcement of alternative behavior with and without extinction in a human operant model. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–11. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4222
DRA must be used without extinction in some cases (e.g., dangerous elopement). The authors used a translational model with college students to study resurgence in different DRA conditions. While there was resurgence in each condition, the most was with DRA with extinction
Furer, M. L., Huang, S., Smyth, J. M., & Wilson, S. J. (2024). Ecological momentary assessment of delay discounting, reward valuation, and craving in very light cigarette users. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–16. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4221
(Open access) The authors used 40 light smokers to test delay discounting and preference reversal. The authors did not find a clear relationship between delay discounting and preference reversal, which they argue is evidence for caution in designing treatments focused on delay discounting
Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions *
10/25 Aspiranti, K. B., MacDonald, M. K., Martinez, J. C., Coleman, D. N., & Zahrn, L. H. (2024). Implementing the Color Wheel System in an Inclusive Middle School Setting. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007241277155
Implementing a color wheel in a middle school created an immediate and lasting impact on inappropriate vocalizations
Kim, J., & McIntosh, K. (2024). Empirically Deriving Cut Scores in the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI) Through a Bookmarking Process. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007241276536
It seems like a panel of experts basically agrees that fidelity in all tiers of PBIS should be above 80% (which is factually true based on what we know about fidelity)
Gage, N. A., Lewis, T. J., Johnson, N. L., & Way, G. T. (2024). The Impact of the Missouri School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (MO SW-PBS) on Disciplinary Exclusions. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007241275691
Missouri has had a state-wide PBIS effort for over a decade, and data shows that schools (at every age level) that implement PBIS with fidelity have lower rates of exclusionary discipline than schools that do not
10/26 Johnstone, P. A., Caldarella, P., Sabey, C. V., & Wills, H. P. (2024). Improving Behavior in a Self-Contained Elementary Classroom for Students With Emotional or Behavioral Disorders: A Study of CW-FIT. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007241275695
CW-FIT is where a teacher describes expected behavior, provides feedback, and typically involves an interdependent contingency (these are common for kids with emotional behavioral disturbance). One teacher implemented the intervention with 5 students, and it increased on-task behavior and rate of praise; the teacher and students rated it as acceptable
Reinke, W. M., Herman, K. C., Huang, F. L., Glenn-Perez, A. L., Raut, P., Aguayo, D., Venkat, S., Boddie, D., Harris, J. M., & Owens, S. (2024). Having a Trusted Adult in School: Concurrent and Predictive Relations With Internalizing Problems Across Development. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007241276534
The authors find that not having a trusted adult to speak with in school is correlated with problems of "internalizing" (e.g., depression, anxiety)
Journal of Behavioral Education
10/22 Bouck, E.C., Cox, S.K., Long, H. et al. Exploring Modified Schema Based Instruction to Support Data Analysis Problem Solving: A Systematic Replication. J Behav Educ (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-024-09572-6
The authors used a task analysis, modeling, a graphic organizer, and what sounds like graduated guidance to teach some math skills to kids receiving special education math instruction

I'm trying to be nice but then I see this wet fart of an article: Behavior Analysts, is Avoiding AI Unethical? Every week, we get an article about AI fabricating information. AI has fabricated information within behavior analysis. I'd love to incorporate an energy-hungry borderline malignant predictive text generator into my practice, but computer says no.

“Not Medically Necessary”: Inside the Company Helping America’s Biggest Health Insurers Deny Coverage for Care
Cigna has value-based care contracts with at least 1 provider. They will discuss this in the most general sense, but obviously they don't discuss rates, or what exactly determines outcomes (though they imply that they rely almost solely on Vineland scores). A pessimist might say that VBC is a way that insurers are trying to figure out how to pay as little as possible. Coincidentally Cigna has an entire business based on AI that can deny service -- and that they advertise will save money by denying service. Is it ethical not to use??

Board cancels costly psychologist licensing exam after pushback led by Texas, AP
Is this a national trend, or just Texas? They wanted to include a $450 skills test in addition to the current $800 knowledge exam, and while it is expensive, combining knowledge and skill are surely the components of a successful practitioner who can affect hundreds of lives. Hairdressers are licensed (in some states, anyway) using this exact model -- they have to pass a practical exam. At least your hair will be ok.
