Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis *
9/9 Shingleton-Smith, C., Koudys, J., Azzano, A., & Feldman, M. (2024). Telehealth general case parent training for children at risk for autism. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–14. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2913
(Open access) Parents were given telehealth training on promoting child skills, which generalized to teaching new skills, and child performance increased

9/12 Scott, V., Saini, V., & Totino, M. (2024). On the efficacy and efficiency of treating pediatric feeding disorder. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–20. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2912
(Open access) In a meta-analysis, 36 studies were included and the authors find that studies including escape extinction and non-escape extinction were the most effective, but studies without escape extinction were more efficient. Some great information in the discussion section

Behavior Analysis in Practice
9/13 Peterson, S.M. Introducing “In Their Own Words” Special Series. Behav Analysis Practice (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-024-00993-3
(Open access) We have some behavior analysis history to look forward to

Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
9/9 Miller, P., Kable, J. W., & Lempert, K. M. (2024). Willingness to wait outperforms delay discounting in predicting drinking severity. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–12. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4210
Pooling data from previous studies, the authors found that willingness to wait for a reinforcer when the wait time is uncertain was a better predictor of drinking severity than delay discounting

Miller, B. P., Csölle, K., Chen, C., Lester, A., Weinsztok, S. C., Aston, E. R., & Amlung, M. (2024). Exploring the suitability of cannabis use with next-day responsibilities: A behavioral-economic and qualitative study. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–16. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4209
In a hypothetical purchasing/consumption task, people will consume less cannabis when they have responsibilities the next day, with the top responsibilities being a job interview or caring for children

Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions *
9/8 Del Vecchio, M. L., Crosland, K., & Fuller, A. (2024). The Effects of Self Monitoring With I-Connect to Increase On Task Behavior of Students With or at Risk for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 0(0). https://doi.org/10.1177/10983007241268784
I-Connect, a self-monitoring app created by the University of Kansas, was used with reinforcement to increase on-task behavior of 3 kids at risk for EBD

The Psychological Record
9/12 Sarno, B.G., Kestner, K.M. A Replication of a Nonsequential Renewal Model and a Failure to Attenuate Nonsequential Renewal with Extinction Cues. Psychol Rec (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-024-00608-x
Sequential renewal is if a problem behavior is treated in one location but returns in a different location (e.g., treatment in an inpatient clinic; goes home and behavior returns). Nonsequential renewal is akin to typical treatment (e.g., a few hours in a clinic, then return home). In experiment 1, nonsequential had greater renewal (though another study found the opposite), and in experiment 2, an olfactory extinction cue did not mitigate renewal

9/13 Suarez, V.D., Najdowski, A.C., Persicke, A. et al. A Laboratory Evaluation of the Effects of Empathy Training on Racial Bias. Psychol Rec (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-024-00606-z
(Open access) In a translational experiment, if participants are shown a frame of agreement with a group, they show less bias towards that group; if they are shown a frame of disagreement, they show more bias towards that group. Three weeks ago we featured a similar article that aimed to reduce racial bias in children. Seems like an excellent application

Journal of Behavioral Education
9/14 Du, L., Speckman, J. & Fienup, D.M. Applying “Mastery” Criteria to Sets and Individual Operants: A Replication with Preschoolers with Disabilities. J Behav Educ (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-024-09564-6
Teaching individual targets and replacing them when mastered is more effective and efficient than teaching "sets" where every target needs to meet mastery before replacing with a new set. I believe that this is a replication of sorts, and in looking I found that one of the authors published a book chapter on the topic last year

Samudre, M.D., LeJeune, L.M. & Viotto, J. The Effect of a Tiered Professional Development Framework on Check-In/Check-Out Treatment Fidelity. J Behav Educ (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-024-09566-4
In implementing a student Check-in/Check-out (CICO) system, the teachers were given a tiered support. 1 teacher only needed tier 1 support, but 3 others needed tier 2 support to reach fidelity

Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science
9/14 Existential Therapies and the Extended Evolutionary Meta-Model: Turning Existential Philosophy into Process-Based Therapy
(In press) (Open access) Existential concerns (like death) may be easily included in process-based therapy

Autism services, behavioral health, etc.

How Autism Therapy’s Continued Evolution Is Pushing Providers to Deliver Better, More and Different Services
The optimist in me: yes, great, get all the necessary services in one location, wonderful for the client. The pessimist in me: private equity has found that running "a good ABA clinic" doesn't bring in enough profit so they're slapping on whatever other services that may or may not be needed (better than literal fraud I guess?). The private equity in me: feed me peasant blood

Meet the winners of the 2024 Ig Nobel Prizes, Ars Technica
We've written about Project Pigeon here before, and it's finally getting its due!

“Established in 1991, the Ig Nobels are a good-natured parody of the Nobel Prizes”

Wait, no!

Flashback

Julie Vargas in her father’s basement

First, a baby in a box, then exiled to a basement? Julie picked up the posthumous Ig Nobel prize for her father for his work on pigeon-guided bombs, and she seems like an altogether well-adjusted individual. But Deborah, rumor has it…
