Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis *

8/14 Tincani, M., Gilroy, S. P., & Dowdy, A. (2024). Extensions of open science for applied behavior analysis: Preregistration for single-case experimental designs. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1–13. https://doi.org/10.1002/jaba.2909
The authors argue in favor of "preregistration" of studies -- what this boils down to is detailing your study before you start it. This is in opposition to the morally and scientifically questionable practice of "p-hacking" where a researcher uses a bunch of statistical tests on a data set until they get a result.

Perspectives on Behavior Science
8/17 Marin, R., Fienup, D.M. Relating in the Wild: Toward an Analysis of Equivalence Relations Under More Naturalistic Conditions. Perspect Behav Sci (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40614-024-00420-6
Equivalence relations are trained in a lab with controls for numerous variables, but the authors discuss how equivalence relations might arise in real life without those controls

Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior *
8/13 McGee, R. E., Roberts, C. R., & Petursdottir, A. I. (2024). Effects of instructed visual imagining on emergent conditional discriminations. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1–13. https://doi.org/10.1002/jeab.4205
"Visual imagining" (what Skinner might have called "seeing in the absence of the thing seen") was hypothesized by the authors to have a mediating effect on derived stimulus relations. During training for an intraverbal task, one group was instructed to imagine the stimuli, which improved their performance on the task

The Psychological Record
8/12 de Almeida, R.V., Barnes-Holmes, D. & Leslie, J.C. Differential Trial-Type Effects in an Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure: Extending the DAARRE Model. Psychol Rec (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40732-024-00604-1
In an IRAP test (essentially how quickly a participant responds to a word or image), some conditions resulted in fluent responding to relationships between words and images (e.g., a match, or opposites) while some conditions resulted in fluent responding to functions (e.g., in a test with happy/sad faces, there was a bias towards "happy" words and images). The authors argue that the distinction is meaningful for RFT as a whole

Journal of Behavioral Education
8/16 Stricker, C., Mao, J., Cassidy, S. et al. A Relational Frame Theory-Based Intervention for Improving Reading and Mathematical Competencies Among School Children. J Behav Educ (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-024-09559-3
(Open access) An online relational-training game, administered 1-3 time per week for 45 minutes, improved reading and math scores for students over treatment-as-usual. The authors note that the system is similar to Mark Dixon's PEAK, and I'll note the overlap with Direct Instruction

McLucas, A.S., Som, S., Fleming, J. et al. Using Video Modeling Plus Feedback to Teach Vocational Social Skills to Employment-Aged Autistic Youth. J Behav Educ (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-024-09561-9
(Open access) Video modeling with feedback was successful in teaching vocational skills to 3 autistic teens in a simulated program, though there were mixed results in generalization to real work sites with supervisors

8/17 Akers, J.S., Davis, T.N., Wicker, M. et al. A Practitioner Guide for Schedule Thinning Following Functional Communication Training. J Behav Educ (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10864-024-09558-4
The authors created, from a literature review, a guide to schedule thinning

Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science
8/16 Development of the Southampton Experiential Avoidance and Acceptance Scale (SEAAS)
(In press) An 18 item scale for assessment

Parents Rage Against New Fee to Keep Their Smart Bassinets Smart, The New York Times

“[Dr. Harvey Karp is] a former pediatrician who created the Snoo after becoming frustrated with the lack of progress in reducing rates of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS.”

Air Crib is superior to Snoo, but “smart bassinet” is superior to “baby box.”

Flashback

Behavior analysts used to make things

Sure, there was the Air Crib, which may have saved the lives of a few babies. But what about the Pavlok, a device which you could use in order to give yourself a contingent electric shock (now described on the website as a “snap” or “electrical impulses”)? Or on a serious note, the MotivAider, a very cool device that seems to have been buried by smartphones. But the further you go back, the more that was produced.
